Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)
Fast & Reliable Surface Flaw Detection
Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) is a highly effective Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method used to detect surface and near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic materials, such as iron and steel. By applying an electrically induced magnetic field to a component and dusted iron particles (either dry or in liquid form), flaws become instantly visible as the particles gather along discontinuities.
Key Benefits of MPI
Deep Penetration for Reliable Inspections
- dummyDetects even minute cracks (up to 0.100” deep)
- dummyFast and cost-effective with instant results
- dummyWorks on raw and manufactured components – including castings, forgings, weldments, and safety-critical automotive parts
- dummySuitable for high-volume testing – processes up to 500 parts per hour/wet bench
High-Volume Magnetic Particle Testing Solutions
At Certified Testing Systems (CTS), we use high-quality Magnaflux machines to inspect a wide range of components in different sizes and shapes.
Our MPI Capabilities Include:
- dummy12 ft Wet CTS Unit – A 6,000-amp wet MPI system with a 2,000-amp secondary coil, handling parts from 1” to 12’ long and up to 24” in diameter.
- dummyMultiple Duo-VEC Wet Benches – Suitable for testing transmission components, crankshafts, clutches, gears and bolts.
- dummySteel Bar-Round, flat, square up to 30’ in length.

On-Site Mobile Magnetic Particle Inspection
Need on-site MPI testing? Our mobile units are fully equipped to perform Magnetic Particle Inspection at your facility, ensuring efficient, real-time results. We inspect:
- dummyPower-generating turbines
- dummyBoilers & pressure vessels
- dummyStructural weld joints
- dummyCrane assemblies & hooks
- dummyPipelines & handling equipment
MPI Advantages & Limitations
Advantages
- dummyFast, cost-effective, and easy to interpret
- dummyImmediate results with minimal surface preparation required
- dummyLess training required than UT (Ultrasonic), RT (Radiographic), or ET (Eddy Current) testing
- dummyHighly reliable for testing surface-level defects
Limitations
- dummyOnly works on ferromagnetic materials (iron, steel) and powder metal
- dummyCan only detect flaws at or near the surface
- dummyMagnetic field must be properly aligned with the defect for accurate detection
